Yi Jin Jing - Muscles-Tendon Strengthening

Updated: May 24, 2022

This is what I found in Wikipedia about a brief introduction of Yi Jin Jing (YYJ):

"The Yijin Jing (simplified Chinese: 易筋经; traditional Chinese: 易筋經; pinyin: Yìjīnjīng; Wade–Giles: I Chin Ching; lit. 'Muscle/Tendon Change Classic') is a manual containing a series of exercises, coordinated with breathing, said to enhance physical health dramatically when practiced consistently. In Chinese yi means "change", jin means "tendons and sinews", while jing means "methods".

While some consider these exercises as a form of Qigong, it is a relatively intense form of exercise that aims at strengthening the muscles and tendons, so promoting strength and flexibility, speed and stamina, balance and coordination of the body. These exercises are notable for being a key element of the physical conditioning used in Shaolin training."

There are several versions of YYJ. The one I learned is called Hua Shan Lao Ren 24 Forms YJJ. All the movements initiated by rocking the pelvis that create a whip movement of the spine. From the spine, the energy is transferred from the shoulder joints to the wrist, and from the hip joints to the ankles. The movement is coordinated with the reverse abdominal breathing. The rule is: inhale to gather the energy, and exhale to release. The YJJ movements are shown in the Video section.
