What is Taiji Party

Taiji Quan (TJQ) is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for defense training, health benefits, and meditation. It is a mind and body training. People sometimes referring TJQ is a Qi Gong practice, which is also true. You can gain stronger Qi if you can learn and practice correctly.

My name is David Cheng, a retired environmental engineer and currently studying the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). I have over 40 years of experience "playing" TJQ Note I use "playing". It is because while moving through the Taiji forms, I want my mind to be as concentrated and joyful as a kid playing a game.

After years playing TJQ, I gained a strong sense of the energy (or so-called "Qi") moving inside my body. So I started to use my logic thinking trying to figure out what was happening inside my body. I started to learn TCM and anatomy by myself. After I was retired from my successful engineering carrier, I decided to go back to school learning TCM in a 4 year program. This is my third year in the program. I am gradually connecting the dots between the Western anatomy and the Easter TJQ and TCM and develop a powerful and unique steps learning TJQ.

TJQ has been proofed to decrease stress, anxiety, and depression; improve mood, improve aerobic capacity; increase energy and stamina; increase flexibility, balance and agility; and improve muscle strength and definition (Tai Chi: A gentle way to fight stress, Mayo Clinic) . However, it was so hard to learn! This is what my student wrote about his learning experience in TJQ:

"I have watched TaiJi videos. I have “learned” TaiJi from several instructors. I have exposed to several TaiJiQuan styles. I have copied many forms; 24, 32, 42, 48, etc. I have mimicked various movements. Yet, I felt shallow, hollow and superficial. I did not understand what these physical expressions are all about. There must be some common thread underlying all these TaiJi activities extending beyond TaiJiQuan to sword, fan, stick, spear,…

Various TaiJi Masters have different ways of teaching students. Many of the terminologies and concepts are abstract. Some are referred as feels. To beginners, who are just learning the basics, this approach is not particularly helpful. Most people, in spite of years of exposure and practice, cannot advance to the next level even though they can recall and mimic the movements of many forms.

I need a simple, concise and clear concept of what basic TaiJi is about along with a scientific approach to achieve it. "

I believe the learning experience described above happened to many people. This is why I want to create this blog, trying to provide a scientific approach to learn TJQ that is easy to understand and fun to learn. This is why I named this blog as Taiji Party. I would like all the participants to enjoy playing the unique games while gaining the basic principles to be healthy and learning TJQ.
