What is Qi?

Updated: May 14, 2022

A lot of people refer TJQ as Qi Gong. We can say this is right because we can nourish our Qi through the right practice of TJQ. When we talk about Qi Gong, we have to understand what is Qi. In my personal understanding and experience, Qi is nothing but a form of energy. Just like a moving car, our body is a biomechanical machine. It needs to intake fuel (breath, drink, and eat) and discharge waste. We use the fuel to produce energy. This energy is used to maintain our body temperature and operations. In the Chinese Yin-Yang concept, we can view our physical mass (such as muscles, tendons, and joints) as Yin, and the invisible energy (Qi) as Yang.

Our Chinese ancestors understood the Qi generates by our internal organs and communicates with the rest of our body, including our limbs and torso, through the so called "meridians". There are 12 regular meridians and 8 extra meridians. Different organ generates different type of Qi for its functions. You can imagine the Qi flows through the meridians just like the tap water flows through the pipelines.
